ART
Hugo is a figurative artist working in a variety of media. His work draws inspiration from diverse sources, from his academic research and art history to daily life and personal memories. Observational drawing is at the core of his practice. For Hugo, drawing is an act of empathy: a way to look harder, fine-tune perception, and establish connection. For this reason drawing also informs his scholarship and teaching. Close looking is an essential skill for any art historian; drawing is arguably the best way to cultivate it. Hugo is a graduate of the Royal Drawing School in London.
He is currently working on new ways to integrate an artistic engagement with the ancient world into his writing.
